Sun Damage Treatment

Photodynamic Therapy:
An insurance covered treatment method for chronic sun damage.

Photodynamic therapy is a revolutionary two-step process to treat a variety of skin diseases including actinic keratosis (pre-cancerous lesions).  Photodynamic therapy specifically treats the problem skin while leaving normal skin unaffected. Multiple lesions are simultaneously treated at each session and treatment may also prevent the development of new lesions.

In the first step, a photosensitizing gel (Ameluz®) is applied to the skin. It is absorbed by the damaged cells. Laser or light source exposure activates the light sensitive compound to eliminate the targeted cells, such as precancerous and cancerous cells.

Photodynamic treatments are safe, effective and well tolerated by most patients. The treatment feels like some gentle heat on the skin. The desired outcome involves a few days of redness and scab formation. Once these areas resolve, fresh, renewed skin is revealed. The treatment is a quicker and more tolerated process than using an anticancer cream, like efudex (fluorouracil cream). Post-treatment patients are advised to avoid exposure to sunlight for 3-5 days following the treatment.

The treatment can be conducted on the face, chest, hands and other areas of concern. The procedure is typically covered by insurance. You can check with your insurance carrier for coverage; use codes:
Procedure code: 96574, Diagnosis Code: L57.0
Procedure code: J7345 x 200 units, Diagnosis Code: L57.0
